MAK Searches for Sit-In Vice Chancellor

With the term of Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Lillian Ekirikubinza-Tibatemwa, ending next month and government-proposed reforms to the Universities and Other Tertiary Institutions Act (UOTIA) not yet tabled before Parliament, the Makerere University Council has moved in to avert a potential crisis.

Prof. Ekirikubinza-Tibatemwa, the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic Affairs) has been acting in the top office since the expiry of Prof. Livingstone Luboobi’s term in May 2009. Meanwhile, the second Deputy Vice Chancellor (Finance and Administration), Prof. David Bakibinga, is on an extended leave and his term also ends in October. In addition to this, other top management positions have been advertised as the respective contracts of the office holders also near the end dates. These are Academic Registrar, University Secretary, University Librarian and University Bursar (who has retired).

Ruckus, Ruckus: Riots, Rampage and Ruins in the City

 As I walked down to Mary Stuart Hall with Patricia, a friend, a buzz on my phone startled me. It was an SMS from Mosha, "Hey Joe, am in town stranded in a building. People are rioting!" it read. The message did not make much sense to me; after all I was exhausted after a boring economics lecture. I insensitively decided to slip my phone back into the pocket, as if it didn’t matter anyway. Little did I know that the message I had just received signaled a horrific scene that would play out in the heart of Kampala city for the next two days.

MAK To Honor Professor Mazrui

  Makerere University will on 11th August hold a series of events in recognition of the services rendered by Professor Ali Mazrui to the University.    The events will start with a general procession from the university main gate up to the Faculty of Social sciences where Professor Mazrui was Dean, Head of Department and professor of political science and public administration.
